The 2023 edition of the BET Awards brought together music, film, and sports stars on Sunday at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles. From electrifying performances by Africa’s Afrobeat king, Davido, to honoring hip-hop legend Busta Rhymes with the All-Time Achievement Award, this year’s BET Awards had audiences on the edge of their seats throughout the night.
One of the highlights of the evening was the celebration of hip-hop’s 50th anniversary, featuring a tribute performance to the late Tina Turner, paying homage to her iconic contributions to the genre. Several winners were announced during the broadcast, including Latto and Coco Jones.
SZA and BeyoncĂ© shared the spotlight, as their albums tied for the coveted Album of the Year award. Future’s collaboration “Wait For U” featuring Drake and Tems took home the Best Collaboration award, while SZA was crowned Best Female R&B/Pop Artist. In the Best Male R&B/Pop Artist category, both Chris Brown and Usher emerged as winners.
Coco Jones was named Best New Artist, while the duo Drake and 21 Savage claimed the Best Group award. Latto’s impressive skills earned her the title of Best Female Hip Hop Artist, and Kendrick Lamar was recognized as the Best Male Hip Hop Artist.
In the gospel and inspirational category, “Bless Me” by Maverick City Music and Kirk Franklin won the Dr. Bobby Jones Best Gospel/Inspirational Award. BeyoncĂ©’s “Break My Soul” secured the BET Her Award and the Viewer’s Choice Award.
The video of the year went to SZA for “Kill Bill,” while Teyana “Spike Tey” Taylor was acknowledged as the Video Director of the Year. The Marvel blockbuster “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” took home the Best Movie award, and Angela Bassett and Damson Idris won the Best Actress and Best Actor categories, respectively.
The Youngstars Award went to the talented Marsai Martin, and Angel Reese and Jalen Hurts were named Sportswoman and Sportsman of the Year. Burna Boy continued to make waves internationally, winning the Best International Act award.
