The President of Ohaneze Ndigbo, Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, has once again appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari to release Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), from the custody of the Department of State Service (DSS).

Iwuanyanwu made the appeal on Thursday during the flag-off ceremony of the dredging of Oguta Lake-Orashi River in Imo State, which was attended by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo.

In his speech, Iwuanyanwu pleaded with President Buhari to release Kanu before he leaves office on May 29, stating that Igbos are not seceding from Nigeria.

He emphasized that Igbos are everywhere and have investments in various parts of the country, so leaving those investments behind would not be a feasible option.

The Ohaneze President further stated that releasing Kanu would be greatly appreciated by the Igbo community, and he urged Vice President Osinbajo to pass on the message to President Buhari.

Iwuanyanwu also reminded Buhari that he has been honored by Ohaneze Ndigbo and is considered a member of the organization.

Nnamdi Kanu has been in DSS custody since he was brought back to Nigeria from Kenya on June 19, 2021.

The Federal Government has since filed treason and terrorism charges against him.

The call for his release has been ongoing, with various groups and individuals speaking up on his behalf.
