The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has issued a travel advisory to Nigerian citizens following concerns raised by the United States government regarding the misuse of U.S. visas.
The advisory emphasised the need for travellers to strictly adhere to the conditions of their visas to avoid severe consequences.
In a statement, NIS Public Relations Officer Akinsola Akinlabi noted that violations such as overstaying, working without authorisation, or engaging in activities inconsistent with the visa’s purpose could lead to visa revocation, deportation, and ineligibility for future travel to the U.S.
The advisory specifically cautioned students in the U.S. to remain in active study, as withdrawing from their programmes or frequent absenteeism could result in their visas being cancelled.
It also highlighted that applications for tourist visas may be denied if the applicant’s primary intent is to give birth in the U.S. to secure citizenship for their child.
The NIS stated that it is actively collaborating with the U.S. Mission in Abuja to address these concerns and to prevent Nigeria from being subjected to any expanded visa restrictions.
The service urges all Nigerian travelers to be responsible and comply with U.S. immigration laws to maintain the integrity of Nigeria’s international travel relations.
