Nigerian Student Jàiled in UK for Hospital Fráud Using Fake ID

A Nigerian student has been convicted in the United Kingdom for fraudulently working as an unqualified healthcare support worker in NHS hospitals.

Oluwabunmu Adeleiyi, 30, who was residing in Cardiff on a student visa, secured work at Neath Port Talbot Hospital and the Caswell Clinic in Bridgend. Cardiff Crown Court heard she and two accomplices used a shared false identity to bill the National Health Service approximately £16,000 per month via staffing agencies.

Adeleiyi pleaded guilty to four counts of fraud by false representation. She received a 10-month prison sentence for each charge, to run concurrently, which was suspended for two years. She was also ordered to complete 100 hours of unpaid community service.

The scheme unravelled when hospital staff noticed discrepancies on her identification card at the end of a night shift. A subsequent investigation revealed that Adeleiyi, who had no formal training in patient care or restraint, had accessed confidential medical records and secured restricted wards actions health authorities warned could have led to “catastrophic” consequences for patient safety.
