The Federal Government of Nigeria and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) are poised to sign a historic agreement on Wednesday, January 14, aimed at securing long-term stability in the nation’s public universities.
The official signing ceremony, scheduled for 11:00 a.m. in Abuja, was announced by the Federal Ministry of Education. This marks a major resolution to the prolonged negotiations over the 2009 FGN-ASUU agreement, which had sparked recurrent strikes and academic disruptions for over 16 years.
The cornerstone of the new deal is a 40% salary increase for university academic staff. Beyond this, the agreement introduces a comprehensive funding model to revitalize universities, with dedicated allocations for:
· Research activities and modern laboratories.
· Library resources and teaching equipment.
· Staff development programs.
The agreement also proposes the creation of a National Research Council, which would be funded with at least 1% of Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) to boost research nationwide. The entire package, effective from January 1, 2026, aligns with the government’s Renewed Hope Agenda and is scheduled for a comprehensive review after three years.
