Niger Junta Leader Challenges ECOWAS Sanctions, Calls Them Unjustified

General Abdourahamane Tchiani, the leader of the Niger junta,has openly criticized the sanctions imposed by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), deeming them as unjust.

He expressed his views in a televised address on Saturday evening.

Niger: ECOWAS tightens sanctions, junta demands power supply

Tchiani vehemently demanded the restoration of electricity supply that had been cut off by the Federal Government as part of the sanctions enforced on the coup leaders following the ousting of President Mohamed Bazoum on July 26.

His comments followed a meeting with an ECOWAS delegation led by former Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar (retired).

Niger junta slams ‘inhumane’ ECOWAS sanctions

Tchiani asserted that the regional economic sanctions imposed by ECOWAS were unnecessary and seemed to unfairly punish the ordinary citizens of Niger.

He noted that the lack of electricity was causing significant challenges in hospitals, leading to loss of life among patients, including children.

He further highlighted the difficulties created by border closures, which were severely hindering access to essential supplies such as food and medicine.

After the military takeover in Niger Republic, ECOWAS issued a seven-day ultimatum for the junta to reinstate the deposed President Bazoum.

Despite international pressure, the military leadership in Niger has maintained its stance against reinstating Bazoum.

During his approximately 12-minute speech, Tchiani suggested that ECOWAS might be planning a military intervention by collaborating with foreign forces to occupy Niger.

He clarified that the junta’s objective was not to hold onto power but to engage in meaningful dialogue that respects the wishes of Niger’s determined and resilient populace…[CONTINUE READING HERE]>>>
