The Federal Government’s newly installed CCTV surveillance system on the Third Mainland Bridge has led to the real-time arrest of three individuals suspected of vandalizing public infrastructure. The Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, presented the suspects, who were allegedly captured on camera stealing 156 cat-eye reflective lights (solar road studs) installed for road safety and visibility.
According to Minister Umahi, the trio were seen prying open and removing the devices from the bridge. Although they identified themselves as scavengers, they reportedly could not provide a clear justification for their actions. Umahi praised the swift response of the police and the monitoring team, highlighting the incident as proof of the new surveillance system’s effectiveness.
The Minister expressed serious concern over the persistent vandalism of government property and called on Nigerians to view the protection of public assets as a shared responsibility. He also condemned reckless behavior near construction sites, referencing a recent fatal incident involving a worker on the Lagos–Calabar Coastal Highway.
Umahi has directed the Lagos State Controller of Works to ensure the suspects are prosecuted and issued a warning that the government’s fully operational “Eagle Eye” CCTV system is now actively monitoring major roads to detect and deter such crimes.
