According to the Association of Senior Staff of Banks, Insurance and Financial Institutions, an organization representing workers in the banking sector, Nigerian banks lost N5 billion due to attacks on their assets by protesters demonstrating against a scarcity of naira currency.
The group’s president, Oluwole Olusoji, announced this in Lagos on Thursday, revealing that 17 commercial banks across the country were targeted by the protesters.
Olusoji further stated that bank buildings were set on fire, ATMs were destroyed, and bank employees were attacked during the protests.
Olusoji in his word: “We call on the public to desist from threatening or attacking our members or destroying our properties as they will be only proverbially cutting their noses to spite their faces. We can only give what we have been provided with and nothing more,”.
It was reported that protests in Edo, Delta and other parts of the country led to loss of lives and properties.
