In a bid to expand Twitter’s services, CEO Elon Musk has announced that the platform will be adding voice and video chat features.
Musk said that this new feature would allow users to communicate with anyone on the platform without giving out their phone numbers.
The new messaging feature on Twitter will be in direct competition with services like Messenger, Signal, Telegram, and WhatsApp.
Musk also took the opportunity to criticize WhatsApp, saying that it cannot be trusted.
Twitter will also be encrypting direct messages on the platform to safeguard user privacy.

Musk has previously talked about building an all-purpose “X” application that combines messages, payments, and more.
