Due to recent violent protests in Abeokuta, Ogun State over the shortage of new naira notes and fuel, commercial banks have closed to avoid attack.
Freshreporters Media gathered on Tuesday that some protesters attacked banks and ATMs, leading to one shooting during an attempted robbery at a First Bank branch.
It was further gathered that banks have also refused to refill their ATMs, leaving residents unable to withdraw money.
A banker stated that the closure is indefinite until further notice.
“We are also Nigerians, why [are they] attacking us? We are also going through a lot, even as bankers. We shouldn’t be the target of any protest. As I’m talking to you now, all of us are in our houses until further notice. We cannot come and die,” he said.
However, residents of Ogun State are now experiencing greater difficulties as they are unable to access cash.
Sulaimon, who is a POS operator in Oluwo area of Abeokuta, held the protesters responsible for exacerbating the situation.
Sulaimon said: “We used to get some cash on a daily basis before, no matter how small. Now that the banks are not working again, what do we do? We will all suffer for it. We just have to be patient and protest against these problems with our votes.”
