A 14-year-old software engineer, Zainab Akinola, has opened up on the obstacles young girls face in the technology sector, calling for greater support and inclusivity.
In a recent interview at the International Girls in ICT Day event, sponsored by Cisco in partnership with WISE Nigeria, held at Yurdais Heights, Idowu Martins, Victoria Island, the teenage tech prodigy shared her experiences navigating a male-dominated industry, emphasizing that gender bias and limited access to mentorship are among the key challenges discouraging girls from pursuing careers in tech.
Speaking about the male-dominated perception of the tech industry and the steep costs of formal training, she said: “Many girls think tech isn’t for them simply because they don’t see enough women in the field.
“But that’s changing. Today, more girls are not only learning tech but excelling at it.”
Regarding the issue of cost, Zainab emphasised that financial limitations shouldn’t stifle passion, she said: “Not everyone can afford training programs that cost hundreds of thousands, even millions.
