The Federal Government of Nigeria has expressed its commitment to pursuing diplomatic solutions first in removing the military junta and restoring democratic rule in Niger Republic. The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ibrahim Lamuwa, made this assurance during a conversation with the diplomatic corps about the political situation in Niger.
Lamuwa emphasized that deploying Nigerian troops would only be considered if all diplomatic efforts fail. President Bola Tinubu is determined to ensure the return of the ousted President, Mohamed Bazoum, to power through peaceful means.
The government also called on the international community to stand in solidarity with the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in its efforts to restore democratic governance in Niger.
It is essential for ECOWAS’s reputation that the international community strongly condemns the coup in Niger, showing their preference for democracy and constitutional rule over other forms of governance.
The recent coup in Niger, along with similar events in Burkina Faso, Mali, and Guinea, has raised concerns about regional stability and democratic principles in West Africa. However, Nigeria and ECOWAS firmly believe that President Bazoum is the legitimate leader of Niger, as recognized and supported by ECOWAS, the African Union, and the international community.
In dealing with this situation, a separate delegation led by Babagana Kingibe, a former secretary to the government of the federation, has been assigned to engage with the leaders of Libya and Algeria to seek their cooperation.
