President Andrés Manuel López Obrador of Mexico said on Friday night that his nation will sever diplomatic ties with Ecuador following a police break-in at the Mexican embassy in Quito.
The declaration followed a growing diplomatic gap between the two nations after former vice president of Ecuador Jorge Glas was arrested by Ecuadorian police after they forcibly stormed into the Mexican embassy in Quito. Glas was seeking political refuge there.
Glas is the most sought person in Ecuador and is being investigated for bribery, corruption, and other offenses.
The cops burst through the outer doors of the Mexican embassy in the capital of Ecuador and made their way onto the main terrace.
Ecuador’s Presidency stated in a statement on Friday night that “we are not going to allow any criminal to stay free.” Ecuador is a sovereign nation.
López Obrador retaliated, denouncing Glas’ arrest as a “authoritarian act” and “a flagrant violation of Mexican sovereignty and international law.”
Mexico’s secretary of international affairs, Alicia Bárcena, stated that the event breached the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic affairs and that several diplomats were damaged. [CONTINUE READING HERE]
