Super Eagles’ Maduka Okoye Reacts After Playing First Game In 14 Months

Super Eagles’ goalkeeper, Maduka Okoye, is happy to have finally returned to club football after a 14-month wait.

His inability to feature for his former club, Watford, due to poor form, and a lack of trust at Udinese in the Spanish La Liga since his summer transfer kept him sidelined.

However, on November 1, he seized the chance to play when Udinese fielded him for the Coppa Italia round of 32 clash against Cagliari, even though it didn’t end well with a 2-1 defeat.

Despite the unfortunate outcome, the 24-year-old goalkeeper delivered an impressive performance and was recognized as Udinese’s standout player on the pitch.

Okoye made eight saves during the game and maintained a 73% pass accuracy out of 38 touches.

Reflecting on the match, Okoye said, “It was unfortunate, but I think that in recent times we have been developing a good mentality, offensive and pattern. I thank the club for giving me this opportunity to play, I will learn from this experience. It’s been a long time since I saw the pitch, I also thank the fans. I’m sure I will enjoy playing for this shirt.”

Following his mid-week performance, it is likely that Okoye will be included in the Super Eagles’ squad for the upcoming 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Lesotho and Zimbabwe later this month.
