President Bola Ahmed Tinubu received a delegation from Google at the Presidential Villa, Abuja on Friday.
The delegation, led by Google’s Global Vice President, Richard Gingras, included Adewolu Adene, Government and Public Affairs Manager for Google in West Africa, and Dapo Olorunyomi, the Premium Times Publisher.
During the meeting, President Tinubu expressed the Federal Government of Nigeria’s readiness to support Google in creating one million digital jobs in the country. He praised Nigeria’s creative and talented young population, highlighting their motivation to learn, especially in the era of Artificial Intelligence.
President Tinubu acknowledged Google’s capabilities and tools, which he believes will help the youth excel.
“We are glad that Google is ready to partner with us. You have answered our call on digital innovation and to help our youths. You are supporting our efforts to promote digital economy. We are ready to work with you on your commitment to create 1 million digital jobs in Nigeria,” President Tinubu stated.
Regarding Google’s promotion of free speech, press freedom, and democracy, President Tinubu affirmed the importance of defending these principles and supporting a free society.
The Google Vice President, Richard Gingras, shared his admiration for Nigeria’s young people, who embrace technology and digital tools to expand access to information and promote democracy.
He assured President Tinubu of Google’s interest in Nigeria, offering support to the Federal Government in various areas, including Artificial Intelligence and digital innovations that empower young entrepreneurs.
Gingras highlighted Google’s recent landing of the subsea cable, Equiano, in Nigeria, which will significantly impact internet connectivity demands.
