Johannesburg-based insolvency lawyer Bouwer van Niekerk was fatally shot inside the boardroom of Smit Sew Attorneys and Conveyancers in Saxonwold on Friday morning, freshreporters media had gathered.
Police described the killing as a targeted hit, after assailants posing as clients gained access to his office and opened fire.
The 43-year-old attorney, known for handling high-profile cases involving Gupta-linked firms and a suspected Ponzi scheme, had recently received threats to withdraw from one of the cases but reportedly refused to bow to intimidation.
His parents told News24 he was determined to continue his fight against corruption despite the risks.
The brazen assassination has sparked outrage in South Africa’s legal community. The South African Restructuring and Insolvency Practitioners Association (SARIPA) condemned the killing, calling it “an assault on the judicial system.”
Lawmakers and activists warned the murder mirrors earlier attacks on whistleblowers, deepening fears that justice is increasingly under siege.
