According to a study, if South Koreans don’t start having more children, they will become extinct by the year 2750.
With an average woman having 0.72 children in her lifetime, the nation, which the Times claims is “facing extinction from the world’s first self-inflicted genocide,” saw yet another dramatic decline in birthrates last year.
Demographers are now concerned that South Koreans may not live to see end of the millennium if the decades-long decreasing trend keeps up at this rate.
The 0.72 from last year is the lowest since records have been kept, which is 54 years ago.
‘Underpopulation’ is a threat to other nations as well. In 2022, the US was at 1.89 and the UK was at 1.87, with South Korea at a comparatively superior level of 1.39.
In comparison, South Korea is significantly worse.
The current population of the nation is 52 million.
There were 230,000 births in 2022 as opposed to 249,000 in 2022. This indicates a decline of 7.7%.
Although fewer fatalities occur each year, the decline is not quite large enough to maintain population equilibrium.
Deaths decreased by 5.4% to 352,721 from 2022, indicating a 122,721 reduction in population.
For the fourth year in a row, the nation has seen a higher number of deaths than births.
Three times as many babies as currently are to be born to South Korean women as it is the only was to equalize the numbers.
