Afrobeat musician Seun Kuti has expressed his apologies and offered monetary compensation to the police officer he assaulted during an incident on the Third Mainland bridge in Lagos.
Reports reveal that Kuti, after damaging the officer’s vehicle, was approached by the policeman at his Akin Osiyemi residence in Ikeja. It was during this encounter that Kuti slapped the officer, an act that was captured in a viral video.
Following the altercation, the Inspector-General of Police, Usman Alkali Baba, ordered the arrest of Seun Kuti for further investigation into the incident.
However, sources have disclosed that before the situation gained social media attention, Kuti had already apologized to the assaulted officer and provided ₦12,000 to repair the damaged vehicle.
The officer had trailed Kuti to his Ikeja residence after the altercation, and it was there that Kuti extended his apology and offered compensation.
The officer subsequently reported the incident at the Area F Police Command in Ikeja, submitting a written statement along with the ₦12,000 as evidence.
Confirming these details, the Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, acknowledged that Seun Kuti had indeed apologized to the officer and provided ₦12,000 for the vehicle’s repair.
Hundeyin also mentioned that the officer had already reported the incident at the Area F Police Command and deposited the compensation before the viral video surfaced.
Seun Kuti is currently in custody at the State Criminal Investigation Department (Panti) in Yaba, Lagos State, following a visit to the FCID (Force Criminal Investigation Department) regarding the alleged assault.
As per Section 356 of the Nigerian Criminal Code Act, if found guilty of assault against the unnamed police officer, Seun Kuti could face a maximum of three years imprisonment.
It is important to note that the investigation is still ongoing, and further updates will be provided as the case progresses.
