Imam Abubakar Abdullahi, the cleric from Plateau State who gained global recognition for protecting 262 Christians during deadly communal violence, has died at the age of 90.
His son confirmed that Imam Abdullahi passed away on Thursday night at the Plateau Specialist Hospital in Jos, following a ten-day admission for complications related to a heart condition. He is survived by 19 children.
Imam Abdullahi’s heroic act occurred in June 2018 during a severe outbreak of faith-based violence in Barkin Ladi. At the height of the attacks, he risked his own safety to hide and shelter 262 Christians inside his mosque and his personal residence, protecting them from harm until the violence subsided.
His profound courage and interfaith compassion earned him international honors, including the prestigious International Religious Freedom Award presented by the U.S. Department of State in 2019. He will be laid to rest in his hometown of Nghar village on Friday after Juma’at prayers.
