Greece has become the first nation with a mostly Christian Orthodox population to approve same-sex unions.
Following a 176-76 vote in parliament on Thursday, same-sex couples will now be able to lawfully adopt children in Greece
Kyriakos Mitsotakis, the prime minister of Greece, declared that the new law would “boldly abolish a serious inequality”.
However, it has split Greece, with the influential Greek Orthodox Church leading a ferocious resistance movement. In Athens, its supporters staged a protest demonstration.
Many waved crosses, carried banners, chanted Bible passages, and read prayers on the capital’s Syntagma Square.
Mr. Mitsotakis backed the bill, but dozens of members of his center-right governing party rejected it, so it needed the support of opposition parties to pass. [CONTINUE READING HERE]
