Talk about making a splash! Ekiti State Governor, Biodun Oyebanji, just handed out ₦42 million to 82 standout workers in recognition of their dedication and achievements. The awards were part of the 2024 Public Service Forum and Award ceremony, held on Tuesday in Ado Ekiti, and coincided with the two-year anniversary of Oyebanji’s administration.
Freshreporters News reports that the governor used the event to double down on his commitment to recognizing hard work across the state’s workforce, promising even bigger things down the road—including the long-awaited new minimum wage.
With a big grin, Oyebanji personally handed cheques to several of the winners, giving credit where it was due. He didn’t shy away from acknowledging the tough conditions the workers had braved either.
“We’ve not been able to provide you with sufficient working tools, but despite that, you have remained committed and have delivered on every assignment given to you. This is why I fully support the Head of Service in our efforts to continue rewarding performance. We will keep scaling this up annually because you deserve the best, and that’s exactly what we will give you,” the governor said.
On the hot topic of the new minimum wage, Oyebanji reassured the crowd that better days are right around the corner. He made it clear that his government is working to ensure everyone benefits—no worker or pensioner left behind.
“I want to reassure you that the new minimum wage will eventually make you smile. I believe in the rule of law, and since the wage has been passed into law by the National Assembly and assented to by the President, it is mandatory for me to uphold it. The slight delay in implementation is due to our efforts to ensure that all segments of the public service, including pensioners, benefit simultaneously,” he explained.
He also urged workers to place their trust in labour leaders, emphasizing the transparent partnership between the government and the unions.
Looking back on the past two years, the governor got a bit sentimental, thanking the workers for their loyalty and support. “Without your support, we wouldn’t have achieved anything significant.
