President John Dramani Mahama has dismissed Ghana’s Chief Justice, Gertrude Torkonoo, after a high-level commission of inquiry found her guilty of falsifying judicial records and misusing public funds.
The five-member investigative panel, chaired by a Supreme Court judge, concluded that her actions amounted to “stated misbehaviour” under Article 146(1) of the Constitution.
The removal, announced Monday, marks the first time in Ghana’s history that a sitting Chief Justice has been investigated and dismissed from office.
According to Presidential spokesperson Felix Ofosu, the decision was based on clear and substantiated evidence presented to the inquiry.
“President Mahama has accordingly removed the Chief Justice from office with immediate effect,” the statement said.
While the dismissal is being hailed as a bold step in Mahama’s anti-corruption campaign, questions remain about whether the former Chief Justice will face criminal prosecution.
Her removal is expected to send shockwaves through Ghana’s judiciary and political class, raising both concerns about institutional integrity and hopes for deeper judicial reforms.
