In a tragic incident on Friday, the convoy of former Imo State Governor Rochas Okorocha came under attack by unidentified gunmen, resulting in the death of a police officer. The assault took place in the Ihube community along the Okigwe-Enugu expressway.
This region has been plagued by the presence of terrorists who have been perpetrating acts of violence, including kidnappings and killings, particularly targeting travelers and local residents.
The Ihube area has witnessed the invasion of several politicians’ residences in the past, forcing many residents to flee their homes and seek refuge in safer areas such as the state capital, Owerri.
Confirming the unfortunate incident and expressing his dismay, Okorocha, who served as the state’s governor from 2011 to 2019, expressed his sadness at the audacity of the attack on his convoy.
Okorocha revealed that the slain police officer was part of the security detail deployed from the state Government House to accompany him to the funeral of the late mother of former Imo State Governor Emeka Ihedioha.
The former governor, speaking at a birthday celebration in Amaimo, Ikeduru Local Government Area, also shared that the attack occurred while he was returning from Enugu after attending the burial ceremony of the wife of former Senate President Ken Nnamani.
Okorocha further expressed his anger, emphasizing that he had spent two days in Enugu without any untoward incidents, only to face an attack in his home state.
He expressed his dissatisfaction with the deteriorating security situation in Imo State and criticized some individuals who aspire to govern the state, stating that he had identified a capable candidate whom he would endorse at the appropriate time.
An anonymous aide of the former governor provided additional details, stating that the vehicles in the convoy, which included a Sports Utility Vehicle, a bus, and a Hilux, were heavily damaged by bullets. Additionally, two other security personnel were reportedly abducted by the assailants but were later released on the same day.
