Former Ghanaian Finance Minister Detained by U.S. Immigration Authorities

Ken Ofori-Atta, the former Finance Minister of Ghana, has been taken into custody by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents. His lawyers confirmed the detention relates to issues with his immigration status.

Ofori-Atta, 66, has been in the United States since January 2025 receiving medical treatment for prostate cancer, including surgery. His legal team stated that ICE detained him on Tuesday after he applied to extend his stay in the country. He is being held at a facility in the state of Virginia.

In Ghana, Ofori-Atta faces serious legal troubles. He was declared a fugitive by Ghanaian authorities in February 2025 and was formally charged with corruption in November 2025. His lawyers in the U.S. have said he is cooperating fully with immigration officials and expect the matter regarding his status to be resolved quickly.

During his tenure as Finance Minister from 2017 to 2024 under President Nana Akufo-Addo, Ofori-Atta was a central figure, overseeing controversial tax reforms and leading Ghana’s negotiations with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
