Five Nigerian soldiers lost their lives on Tuesday after a bomber drove an explosive-laden vehicle into a military convoy in the Timbuktu Triangle area of Borno State, according to security sources.
Two senior officers a major and a lieutenant were among the casualties, while an unspecified number of troops sustained injuries.
The convoy was returning from a clearance operation that had destroyed several insurgent camps and eliminated multiple fighters when the attack took place.
A soldier stated that the blast caused significant damage to armored and logistics vehicles, affecting equipment essential to ongoing offensive and defensive missions. Despite the losses, military authorities confirmed that operations have continued.
“Every operation comes with setbacks, but we have overcome this. Unfortunately, we lost five soldiers. The commander is safe, and operations are ongoing,” an officer said under anonymity.
The remains of the fallen soldiers have been transported to Maiduguri, while the injured are receiving medical care.
The Timbuktu Triangle is a known hotspot in the insurgency and was previously the site of an ambush that resulted in the capture and killing of Brigadier General Musa Uba.
This latest attack followed recent gains by troops of the Joint Task Force North East, Operation HADIN KAI, under Operation DESERT SANITY.
In a statement, the operation’s spokesman, Lt. Col. Sani Uba, said troops had cleared several terrorist enclaves including Chilaria, Garin Faruk, and Abirma with air support providing intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance.
He added that troops recovered weapons, ammunition, communication devices, vehicles, medical supplies, food items, and fuel dumps, further weakening insurgent capabilities. Attempts by terrorists to disrupt operations using armed drones were also repelled.
According to the military, morale remains high, operations will continue, and troops are committed to restoring lasting peace and stability in the Northeast.
