Fola Adeniran-Ogunsanya, one of the pioneering students of Government College Lagos (GCL) and the son of the late Nigerian politician and lawyer, Adeniran Ogunsanya (SAN), has responded to claims that President Bola Tinubu also attended the school.
Ogunsanya, who asserted that he was part of the first batch of students at the school, revealed that during his four years at GCL, he never crossed paths with President Tinubu.
Ogunsanya’s revelation has emerged amidst the controversy surrounding President Tinubu’s academic records.
The Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, had sought Tinubu’s educational records from Chicago State University in an effort to challenge a ruling by the presidential tribunal.
In an interview with Rifnote, Ogunsanya stated that President Tinubu would be unable to provide the names of individuals he attended the school with if he truly was an alumnus.
He commented, “I only learned last week that he claimed to have attended Government College, Lagos. I reached out to a few of my friends and said, ‘Government College, really? In 1970?’ That’s what caught my attention.”
“Government College wasn’t established until 1974. I was a member of the very first class at Government College, Lagos.”
“Regrettably, the president was not in our class. During the four years I spent there, I do not recall him being present.”
“I would have certainly met him and known him. I belong to the pioneering group of Government College, Eric Moore, so if you want to know the names of most of those who attended Government College, I can easily list them. Can our president do the same? I’m just asking. There were individuals like Solomon Onwukwe, the Shitta Bays, Semiu Ibrahim, and many more.”
Ogunsanya also shed light on how his father initiated the establishment of government colleges in Lagos during his tenure as Commissioner for Education.
He explained, “The government colleges were established in 1974. I could have gone to Igbobi College or St. Gregory’s College, but my father, who was then the Commissioner for Education, insisted that he could not establish schools for Lagos indigenes and have his own son attend a different college.
“How would that appear? When the schools were founded, I was one of the first students to enroll at Government College, Lagos.”
“There were Government College, Lagos, Government College, Epe, one in Ito Ikin, Government College, Badagry, Government College, Ikorodu, and Government College, Ojo, which is now LASU. It used to be a government college back then.”…[CONTINUE READING HERE]>>
