Kaduna State Governor, Uba Sani, has strongly criticized the proposed cash transfer policy of the Federal Government, calling it a “scam.”
The policy, presented by the Tinubu administration, aimed to transfer N8,000 to 12 million Nigerian households for a period of six months as a measure to offset the effects of removing petrol subsidy.
However, following widespread criticism from Nigerians, the plan was eventually shelved. Governor Sani expressed his reservations about the program, highlighting the absence of an accurate database of beneficiaries.
He argued that the lack of reliable data would make it difficult to ensure that the money reaches the intended recipients.
Speaking during an interview with Arise Television’s News Night, the governor questioned the effectiveness of cash transfers during this critical time.
Citing his experience as the Chairman of the Committee of Banking in Nigeria and his oversight of the Central Bank and commercial sectors for the past four years, he asserted that a significant portion of the rural population in the North West, approximately 70 to 75 per cent, is financially excluded and doesn’t even have a bank account.
Governor Sani emphasized the need to address the financial exclusion of these individuals in the North West before implementing any cash transfer program. He urged the government and development partners like the World Bank to invest more in bringing more people into the financial system, especially the vulnerable population.
Opening bank accounts for them and ensuring their financial inclusion would be a more effective way to assist those in need rather than a cash transfer program with uncertain beneficiaries.
