In a recent statement issued on Monday, Oluwatoyin Akinlade, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Interior, announced that the federal government has declared Wednesday and Thursday as public holidays to mark the celebration of this year’s Eid al-Adha.
Eid al-Adha, also known as the Festival of Sacrifice, is an important religious observance for Muslims worldwide. It commemorates the willingness of Ibrahim (Abraham) to sacrifice his son as an act of obedience to God. However, before Ibrahim could carry out the sacrifice, God provided a ram to be sacrificed instead. This event signifies the importance of faith, sacrifice, and devotion.
The declaration of Wednesday and Thursday as public holidays allows Muslims in Nigeria and citizens of diverse faiths to join in the celebration and observe the religious rituals associated with Eid al-Adha. It provides an opportunity for individuals to spend time with their families, participate in communal prayers, and engage in acts of charity and goodwill.
The Ministry of Interior urges Nigerians to use this period to reflect on the virtues of love, peace, and unity, which are fundamental to the progress and development of the nation. They also encourage adherence to COVID-19 safety protocols during the festivities to ensure the well-being of everyone.
