Federal Gov’t supports use of bamboo for affordable, climate-friendly housing

The Federal Government has reiterated its support for the use of bamboo and other sustainable materials in housing construction, highlighting the role of the Nigerian Building and Road Research Institute (NBRRI) in promoting innovative, eco-friendly technologies.

Speaking at a one-day capacity-building workshop on “The Relevance of Bamboo for Climate-Smart Housing Construction: Integrating NBRRI Technologies in Reducing Carbon Footprint” held Wednesday in Abuja, the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Innovation, Science and Technology, Esuabana Nko Asanye, said bamboo-based construction is gaining increasing attention in Nigeria’s housing sector.

Represented by the Director of Environmental Science and Technology, Benadette Oguche, the Permanent Secretary emphasized that bamboo is a highly versatile and renewable resource with applications ranging from building and construction to paper production, food, and traditional medicine.

This was revealed in a statement by the Head P and PRU, Pauline Sule.

The statement reads in part:

“The Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Innovation, Science and Technology, Mrs. Esuabana Nko Asanye has said that Nigerian building and Road Research Institute (NBRRI)Technologies, to address diverse needs within Nigeria’s housing sector on green technologies has gained significant consideration recently as a result of the need to build affordable and durable houses using Bomboo.

“Mrs. Esuabana who was represented by Director Environmental Science Technology (EST) Mrs. Benadette Oguche made this statement at a One-Day Capacity Building Workshop on the Relevance of Bamboo for Climate-Smart Housing Construction: Integrating Nigerian Building Road Research Institute (NBRRI) Technologies in Reducing Carbon Foot Print, today, in Abuja.

“According to the Permanent Secretary bamboo is a versatile plant used for a wide range of purposes including construction reduction in carbon emission, traditional medicine, paper production, food and various purposes as well as a sustainable resource in a long history of the use in building materials.

“Esuabana explained that by adopting this construction materials Nigeria will not only promote environmental sustainability but also ensure that the construction process align with principles of adoptability, comfort and affordability for both low and medium income earners in the country.” [CONTINUE READING HERE]>>>>
