The Federal Government has declared it illegal for electricity distribution companies (DisCos) and their contractors to charge customers for meter installation. The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, announced the ban, stating that smart meters procured under a World Bank-funded program must be provided and installed free of charge to all consumers.
Minister Adelabu emphasized that the policy applies universally, regardless of a customer’s tariff band or location. The goal is to accelerate nationwide metering coverage and end what the government terms extortion linked to installation fees. He issued a stern warning that any official or installer found demanding payment would face sanctions and prosecution.
The move is part of a broader effort to deploy millions of meters across the country. The government aims to improve billing transparency, reduce estimated billing, and rebuild trust between electricity consumers and distribution companies.
