The Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) have signed a landmark new agreement, formally replacing the contentious 2009 pact that led to repeated strikes. The deal, signed at a ceremony in Abuja on Wednesday, aims to ensure long-term stability and improve the quality of education in Nigeria’s public universities.
A key component is a 40% increase in academic staff emoluments through a new Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance. The agreement also introduces “professorial cadre allowances” for full-time professors and institutional leaders to recognize their extra administrative and research responsibilities.
ASUU President, Prof. Chris Piwuna, expressed cautious optimism, stating the union hopes for full implementation without resorting to industrial action. The Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, hailed the agreement as a “decisive turning point” for the tertiary education system.
Other officials, including the Minister of Labour and Employment and the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions, emphasized that sincere and timely implementation is crucial for fostering lasting industrial peace, restoring public confidence, and securing the nation’s academic future. The pact represents a significant effort to begin a new chapter of cooperation between the government and university lecturers.
