FCT High Court Grants Ngige Bail in N2.2bn Fràud Case, Sets Strict Conditions

An FCT High Court has granted bail to former Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, who is facing charges of money laundering and abuse of office.

Justice Maryam Hassan, ruling on Thursday, set stringent bail conditions. Ngige must produce one surety who is a serving director in the Federal Civil Service and owns a property in the FCT with a valid Certificate of Occupancy, which must be deposited with the court.

He will remain in Kuje Correctional Centre until these conditions are fully met.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) arraigned him last Friday on an eight-count charge, including allegations of a N2.2 billion contract fraud and receiving gifts from contractors linked to the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF) while he served as supervising minister from 2015 to 2023. Ngige pleaded not guilty to all charges.

His defense counsel argued for bail on health grounds, while the EFCC opposed it, citing his failure to return his passport after a medical trip abroad. The court ultimately granted bail on liberal terms but with strict requirements.
