The Directorate of Road Traffic Services (DRTS) in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has reported that their Special Task Team confiscated 1,408 motor vehicles, 3,712 commercial motorcycles, and 1,112 tricycles between January and December 2023.
Kalu Emetu, the Head of Public Relations and Enlightenment at DRTS, stated that out of the 3,712 commercial motorcycles that were impounded, some were crushed and the rest of the vehicles were returned to their owners after fines were paid and necessary repairs were made..[CONTINUE READING HERE]>>

In 2023, the agency collected over N127.541 million in fines from owners of impounded vehicles and tricycles, which was deposited into government funds.
Emetu explained that motor vehicles that were deemed unfit for the road were dismantled and handed over to their owners as scrap in order to prevent them from being put back into circulation.
He further clarified that the destruction of motorcycles and vehicles complied with the FCT regulation banning commercial motorcycles and unfit vehicles within the city.
Emetu also emphasized that, according to the law, all motorcycles that were seized for violating traffic rules were automatically forfeited to the government.
A breakdown of the figures revealed that between January and March 2023, 217 vehicles, 836 commercial motorcycles, and 298 tricycles were impounded across the FCT.
In the second quarter of the year, the DRTS impounded 270 vehicles, 964 motorcycles, and 268 tricycles. From July to September, 482 vehicles, 931 motorcycles, and 353 tricycles were seized.
