A young man who reportedly specialized in snatching phones from worship centers in the towns of Ayegbaju, Ekiti, and Oye, Ekiti, has been detained by the Police Command in Ekiti.
Akinwale Adeniran, Commissioner of Police, Ekiti Command, stated that the suspect was taken into custody on Saturday following reports that he had taken seven phones—all of which belonged to different individuals—from Christ Apostolic Church in Ayegbaju, Ekiti.
According to Adeniran and a statement released by Mr. Sunday Abutu, the command’s Police Public Relations Officer, the suspect entered the church under the guise of a member, observed the attendees, and then stole seven phones when everyone was in a state of ecstasy.
“The suspect, during interrogation, confessed to have been operating around Oye-Ekiti and Ayegbaju-Ekiti, with churches as his target.
“He further confessed to have stolen a lot of phones from the Redeemed Christian Church of God and New Reality Christian Centre, all in Oye-Ekiti,” he said.
Investigations, according to the police commissioner, showed that the suspect often transferred the stolen phones to Lagos via car parks, where an accomplice would help him sell them and send the money back to him via an online transfer.
But he said that he had recovered the seven phones he had taken during his last operation at CAC, Ayegbaju-Ekiti. Adeniran went on to say that several of the people the suspect caused harm to had shown up at the police station, recognized him, and had given information about their stolen phones.
He promised that as soon as the inquiry was over, the suspect would be put on trial. [CONTINUE READING HERE]
