In a tragic incident that has shocked the community, the Enugu State Police have apprehended a 21-year-old man identified as Junior Augustine Akor, who stands accused of raping and strangling his 16-year-old female relative, Faith Akuji. The heinous crime reportedly took place on Thursday, June 8, in a bush at Mpole-Ubere in the Ette community, where the suspect hails from.

Confirming the incident and the subsequent arrest, the State Police Public Relations Officer, Daniel Ndukwe (DSP), announced that the Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Ammani, has offered his condolences to the grieving family of the deceased. He described the act as atrocious and unthinkable, directing the police to conduct a thorough and timely investigation to ensure the suspect’s prosecution.

The arrest of Junior Augustine Akor was made possible by the diligent efforts of Police Operatives serving in Igbo-Eze North Division of the Command, with assistance from the Neighborhood Watch Group. The suspect was apprehended on Monday, June 12, at approximately 9:30 a.m.

According to preliminary investigations, the victim had gone missing on the evening of June 8, after her grandfather had sent her to grind cassava in the community center. Despite exhaustive efforts to locate her, the search proved futile. Tragically, the girl’s decomposing body was discovered in the mentioned bush following the suspect’s arrest. Junior Augustine Akor reportedly confessed to dragging the victim into the bush, where he forcefully raped her until she fainted and subsequently died. The victim’s lifeless body, found without lower-body clothing, was taken to the hospital, where doctors on duty confirmed her death.

The case is currently under discreet investigation at the Homicide Section of the State Criminal Intelligence and Investigation Department (State CID). Once the investigation is concluded, the suspect will be arraigned in court to face appropriate charges.

The Enugu State Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Ammani, has emphasized the need for a meticulous handling of the case, urging investigators to expedite their efforts to ensure justice is served. The aim is to bring the perpetrator to trial swiftly and ensure that appropriate punishment is meted out for this heinous crime.
