England Coach Says She Felt Ten-Year Older Against Super Falcons

England Coach Expresses Intense Experience Against Super Falcons at 2023 Women’s World Cup

Sarina Wiegman, the head coach of England’s women’s team, had her heart racing during the thrilling clash with the Super Falcons of Nigeria in the round of 16 at the 2023 Women’s World Cup on August 7.

Despite England’s impressive three consecutive victories in the group stage, including a dominant 6-1 win over China, they faced a tough challenge against the Super Falcons, resulting in a goalless draw after 120 minutes of play.

The match eventually went to penalties, and England secured a 4-2 victory, thanks to Desire Oparanozie and Michelle Alozie missing their spot-kicks for Nigeria.

Throughout the game, the nine-time African champions showcased an unyielding defense and a formidable midfield, making it difficult for England to break through. The Nigerian team even won the ball more frequently than their English counterparts in many parts of the game.

In the first half, Uchenna Kanu’s header narrowly missed the target as it struck the top of the crossbar, while Ashleigh Plumptre’s powerful shot ricocheted off the bar, denying the Super Falcons two golden opportunities to take the lead.

England struggled to replicate the fluidity they demonstrated in their victory over China and had to rely on a penalty shootout to secure their spot in the quarter-finals.

After the intense match, the 53-year-old coach, Wiegman, expressed her feelings, saying,

“I don’t know what my heart rate is, I just know I’m 10 years older.

“I was not worried. It was a really intense game. Nigeria has done really well in the group stages so we were not underestimating them at all and they showed what a good team they were.

“We had trouble getting out of their press. We could do a little better but I also think we should give them credit.”

Despite the tough contest, Wiegman acknowledged Nigeria’s strong performance in the group stages and gave credit to the Super Falcons for their formidable display.

England will now face either Colombia or Jamaica in the quarter-finals of the 2023 Women’s World Cup on Saturday at 11:30 BST…[CONTINUE READING HERE]>>
