El-Rufai Faces Cybercrime Charges Over Alleged Phone Interception

The Department of State Services (DSS) has filed charges against former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai at the Federal High Court in Abuja over allegations of unlawfully intercepting phone communications belonging to National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu.

According to court documents, the charges are linked to comments made by El-Rufai during a live interview on ARISE Television on February 13, in which he reportedly acknowledged knowledge of the interception.

Prosecutors argue that the alleged conduct compromised public safety and national security. In a three-count charge, the DSS stated that the offence violates provisions of the Cybercrimes Amendment Act 2024 and the Nigerian Communications Act 2003.

The agency further alleges that El-Rufai either participated directly in the interception or failed to report those responsible for it.

As of the time of this report, the former governor has not publicly responded to the allegations.
