The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has issued a public alert warning of planned smear campaigns against the agency and its Chairman, Ola Olukoyede. According to a statement, these campaigns are orchestrated by politicians and groups with vested interests in suspects under investigation or prosecution.
The Commission alleges that a “motley crowd of paid jobbers,” including politicians, academics, activists, and fugitives abroad, has been recruited to launch sponsored media attacks. Their stated objective is to create confusion, intimidate the agency into inaction, and falsely paint its anti-corruption efforts as politically biased, particularly as the 2027 general elections approach.
The EFCC has put these alleged actors “on notice,” stating their activities are under close watch and vowing not to be distracted from its mandate. The Commission firmly reiterated its non-partisan stance, noting that politicians from both the ruling and opposition parties are currently facing trial or investigation.
The agency stated it will not be pressured into prematurely disclosing details of its investigations into politically exposed persons. It reaffirmed its commitment to operating in line with its Establishment Act and the Constitution, dispensing justice “without fear or favour” in the fight against corruption.
