The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has brought eight charges against former Labour Minister Chris Ngige, alleging his involvement in corruption exceeding ₦2.2 billion. The court documents claim Ngige awarded contracts to individuals connected to him while he was in charge of the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund during the Buhari administration.
Court filings reveal that firms linked to Ngige’s associates received numerous contracts for consultancy and supply services. Additionally, he is alleged to have accepted gifts amounting to ₦119.8 million, distributed through campaign and scholarship accounts.
These charges breach the Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Act of 2000 and come in the wake of previous reports regarding Ngige’s questioning and detention by anti-corruption agencies.
This situation highlights the necessity for public office to be utilized for the benefit of the public instead of personal gain, with the law addressing any violations of this trust.
