In compliance with an order from the Abuja High Court, the Department of State Services (DSS) has charged the embattled suspended Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, to court. The court had instructed the secret police to either charge Emefiele within one week or release him.
DSS spokesman, Peter Afunanya, announced that Emefiele had been charged to court shortly after the court order was issued. However, the exact court where the charges were filed and the specific allegations brought against Emefiele were not disclosed.
Afunanya emphasized that the DSS had previously applied for a court order to detain Emefiele in 2022, as part of a criminal investigation. Although Emefiele obtained a restraining order from an FCT High Court at that time, he was subsequently arrested by the DSS in June 2023 based on suspected fresh criminal infractions or information, one of which is the basis for his current prosecution.
The Department of State Services assured the public that Emefiele’s case would be handled with professionalism, justice, and fairness. Further details regarding the charges and court proceedings are yet to be made available.
