Tensions escalated in the House of Representatives when Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila found himself at odds with his deputy, Idris Wase, regarding the conduct of the House’s proceedings.
On Wednesday, Gbajabiamila directed that the agenda on the Order Paper be streamlined to accommodate his attendance at the commissioning ceremony of the National Institute of Legislative and Democratic Studies.
Feshreporters learned he emphasized that the Thursday session must conclude by 2 p.m. to facilitate his presence at the event.
“Chairman Business and Rules, let’s keep the order paper light for tomorrow because we have this crucial event—the permanent site of the NILDS—at 2:30. It would be best if we adjourn by 2 p.m.,” he stated.

However, Wase challenged the decision, expressing concern that the House should not prioritize project inaugurations over the completion of pending legislative activities.
“We have already lost a significant amount of time. Why should we suspend numerous important activities just to witness the commissioning of the NILDS project? I humbly request that we fulfill our responsibilities,” he argued.
FReshreporters also report that Gbajabiamila became visibly frustrated, pointing out that no deputy speaker had ever challenged the speaker in such a manner.
“Mr. Deputy Speaker, this is unprecedented. I have been a member of this house for many years, possibly longer than anyone present.”
“This is the first time in history that a deputy speaker has challenged the speaker’s decision,” he exclaimed.
The clash between Gbajabiamila and Wase is believed to be linked to speculations that Wase is leading a faction of disgruntled members in an attempt to impeach Gbajabiamila.
It should be noted that Gbajabiamila is publicly supporting Tajudeen Abbas for the position of House Speaker.
