The Former Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party, Mr Peter Gregory Obi, has criticized the Federal Government over the recent hike in the cost of international passports, describing it as another burden on struggling Nigerians.
In a statement released on Thursday via his official X handle, Obi condemned the increment, noting:
“The obsession of this administration with putting a burden on the populace is becoming legendary and continues to reveal its apparent disconnect with the people and their suffering.”
According to the new rates, the cost of obtaining an international passport in Nigeria has risen to ₦100,000 for a 32-page booklet and ₦200,000 for a 64-page booklet. This marks the third increase in just two years.
Obi further expressed concern that in a country where the new minimum wage is ₦70,000, the cost of acquiring a single passport now surpasses the monthly salary of an average worker— a situation he described as unprecedented globally.
“Instead of making life easier, this government keeps shifting the burden onto ordinary Nigerians. It is alarming that the price of the international passport is higher than what workers earn in a month.”
