Commissioner of Police Orders Trial of Officers Captured Assáulting Civilian in Delta Viral Video

The Delta State Commissioner of Police, Olufemi Abaniwonda, has ordered the immediate arrest and orderly-room trial of officers caught on camera brutalising a young man in Agbor, Delta State.

The disturbing video, which surfaced online earlier this week, showed uniformed officers violently assaulting the civilian, prompting nationwide outrage and condemnation from civil society groups and concerned Nigerians.

In a statement released by the police command, Commissioner Abaniwonda described the actions of the officers as “shameful, unprofessional, and a breach of public trust.”

He confirmed that the implicated officers have been detained and are facing disciplinary proceedings.

The Commissioner reassured the public that the Delta Police Command is committed to enforcing internal accountability and upholding the dignity of all citizens.

Several human rights organisations have welcomed the disciplinary action but are demanding further legal prosecution beyond internal police panels.

“This isn’t just a disciplinary matter—it’s a criminal one,” said a spokesperson for the Civil Rights Watch Nigeria.

The incident has reignited national discussions around police reform and the lingering effects of police brutality in the post-#EndSARS era.
