Comedian Ali Baba Shares His Most Memorable Joke About Former President Obasanjo

In a recent interview on Channels Television’s Sunrise breakfast programme, popular comedian Atunyota Akpobome, also known as Ali Baba, reminisced about his most memorable joke.

According to him, the joke that stood out the most was about ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo‘s supposed frugality.

Ali Baba shared how during his time with Obasanjo as President, he made a joke about the former leader’s reputation for being stingy.

In fact, Obasanjo himself even asked Ali Baba to remove the joke from his book, for which he had written the foreword.

The comedian revealed that the joke centered around people claiming that Obasanjo was very tight-fisted. However, during a chance encounter, Obasanjo discovered that Ali Baba was earning far more than he had thought.

It happened when the former President stumbled upon a budget that revealed Ali Baba’s earnings from an event organized by Audu Ogbeh and Doyin Okupe.

Amusingly, Obasanjo exclaimed, “Ali Baba, one million naira? Why? That’s what he’s been charging since 1999?” The comedian found this situation quite hilarious and went on to narrate another incident where he introduced Obasanjo during an African Union event in Abuja. On that occasion, Obasanjo jokingly referred to Ali Baba as “Ole,” which means “thief” in Yoruba.

Despite the playful banter, members of the African Union perceived it as a compliment.
