City Boy Movement Dismisses Elitism Allegations, Affirms Grassroots Identity

The City Boy Movement has responded to a viral video claiming the group is elitist and government-backed, categorically denying the accusations and reaffirming its grassroots character.

The Movement clarified that it was established in 2022 as a voluntary civic and political support platform focused on democratic participation and national progress. It stressed that it is neither a creation of the government nor run by any state institution.

According to the group, its supporters represent a cross-section of Nigerian society, including traders, artisans, students, farmers, professionals, entrepreneurs, and business leaders.

The Movement stated that economic success does not diminish patriotism and that civic engagement is a constitutional right open to every Nigerian, regardless of social or financial status.

It also addressed the meaning of the term “City Boy,” commonly linked to President Bola Tinubu. The group explained that within the Movement, the phrase symbolises resilience, bold thinking, and transformative leadership not class distinction.

Reaffirming its objectives, the City Boy Movement said its goal is to galvanise citizens especially the youth towards meaningful democratic involvement, enterprise, and national unity. It added that its mission remains anchored in promoting issue-based discourse, supporting reform-focused leadership, and strengthening community ties.

The Movement rejected what it termed deliberate attempts to sow artificial divisions within the country, stressing that sustainable national development can only be achieved through collaboration across regions, professions, and social backgrounds.

It concluded by reiterating its commitment to unity, responsible democratic engagement, enterprise, and long-term development, pledging to stay focused on nation-building rather than what it called narrative manipulation.
