China’s Former Food Reserve Director Sentenced to 10 Years Jail for Collecting Over $2m Br!bes

A former high-level food official was sentenced to 10 years in prison for accepting bribes.

Zhang Wufeng, former director of the National Food Strategic Reserves Administration, was also fined 1 million yuan ($141,000) by the Deyang Intermediate People’s Court on Tuesday, according to China Daily.

Zhang was accused of accepting bribes totaling more than 16.47 million yuan ($2.3 million) from 2003 to 2022.

He was tried for using his position within the government to assist related departments and individuals in matters such as project contracts and personnel selection.

In return for the bribes, Zhang received various benefits, including money, property, and gifts.

He confessed to all crimes and voluntarily disclosed additional facts of bribery previously unknown to the investigating authorities. He also actively returned the bribes he received.

The court considered these factors in determining Zhang’s sentence. However, it also noted that Jang’s conduct caused serious damage to the national interest and undermined public confidence in the government.

As a result, Zhang was sentenced to 10 years in prison and fined 1 million Yuan. His illicit savings will be turned over to the state treasury.

Zhang, 63, a native of Shandong Province, began his career in 1979 and joined the Chinese Communist Party in 1984, serving as director of the State Food Strategic Reserves Administration from 2017 until June 2022.
