President Bola Tinubu has accepted the resignation of Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun, following his submission of a letter citing pressing family considerations.
The President received the resignation earlier today and commended Egbetokun for his decades of distinguished service to the Nigeria Police Force and the nation. He acknowledged his dedication, professionalism, and commitment to strengthening internal security during his tenure.
Egbetokun was appointed in June 2023 to a four-year term, which was expected to end in June 2027 under the amended Police Act.
In light of current security challenges and acting in line with legal provisions, President Tinubu has approved the appointment of Assistant Inspector-General Tunji Disu as Acting Inspector-General of Police with immediate effect.
The President expressed confidence that AIG Disu’s experience, operational expertise, and proven leadership will provide the police force with steady and focused direction during this critical period.
In accordance with the Police Act 2020, President Tinubu will convene a meeting of the Nigeria Police Council to formally consider AIG Disu’s appointment as substantive IGP, following which his name will be forwarded to the Senate for confirmation.
The President reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening national security, building institutional capacity, and ensuring that the Nigeria Police Force remains professional, accountable, and capable of fulfilling its constitutional duties.
