Boko Haram insurgents killed Forward Operations Base commander Major IU Mairiga, three soldiers, and a hunter during a nighttime attack on Mayanti in Bama Local Government Area, Borno State.
Security sources revealed that Major Mairiga fought valiantly, neutralizing several insurgents before being overwhelmed after some soldiers fled the scene. Troops later recovered rocket-propelled grenades, anti-aircraft weapons, PKT machine guns, and insurgent corpses at the location.
Three civilians engaged in reconstruction work were wounded, and several military vehicles and equipment were set ablaze. Major Mairiga had been deployed to the base less than four months ago following a special promotion.
The Joint Task Force (North East) Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK) confirmed that coordinated attacks on Mayanti, Gajigana, and Gajiram between February 28 and March 1 were repelled, with scores of insurgents killed and heavy weapons seized.
