Nigerian billionaire businessman Keji Giwa has sparked intense online debate after making explosive remarks on the TalkwithRuth podcast about the ongoing “Japa” trend.
Speaking candidly, Giwa lamented that many of his top employees have relocated abroad, leaving his businesses struggling with talent shortages.
“A lot of my employees have Japa’d,” he said, noting that some of the best hands he trained eventually left the country.
While the host suggested the employees had “used and abused” him, Giwa disagreed. “Those people that you employed that have now left, they were some of the best workers that you’ve had,” he admitted. “We have now trained all of them to the point that most of them have left the country. What do we have left now?”
He argued that stricter visa policies in the UK and Canada have inadvertently helped Nigerian employers retain staff. “If not for the UK putting stringent rules and Canada putting stringent rules on their visa application, you think they wouldn’t have left?”
In a shocking twist, Giwa openly said he prays for visa denials and deportations so skilled Nigerians can return home.
“I’m praying to God that they deport them. I’m praying to God that their visas are not extended, that UK has its own version of ICE. I need these brains back in Nigeria,” he declared.
Listing his ventures, he stressed that he cannot run them alone. “My brain alone cannot sustain” them, he said. He shared how he secretly prayed for a former employee’s UK visa to be denied so he could rehire her in Nigeria.
However, when asked if he could afford to pay them if they returned home, his response was startling: “The poor distribution of income puts me in a position where I can pay lower wages.”
