La Liga powerhouse Barcelona and coach Xavi Hernandez (44) confirmed their separation on Friday.
The coach had first declared his desire to leave Barcelona in the summer, but new rumors suggested he may stay for the next campaign.
Nevertheless, the Catalan club’s administration decided on Thursday to remove Xavi from his position.
In an official statement, the club said: “FC Barcelona wishes to thank Xavi for his work as coach, as well as for his inimitable career as a player and as team captain, and wishes him every future success in the world.”
The team’s final league match, away to Sevilla on Sunday, will feature Xavi guiding the team for the very last time.
In the upcoming days, Barcelona will “make an announcement regarding the new first-team structure,” according to the statement.
